About
From the Weld to the Sewing Machine — The Story of Mr. C
Hi, I'm Chris Champagne — welder, welding instructor, and the guy behind every cap you see here.
I've been in the welding industry for over 30 years. Growing up, I watched the adults around me build things with their hands. My mother and grandmother were accomplished sewists. My father and uncles were skilled welders, building everything from racecar trailers to decorative wrought iron. I figured if they could do all of that, so could I.
So I went to welding school and spent 15 years in the trade — building aluminum awnings, Sprint cars, dragsters, and everything in between. Today I pass that knowledge on as a welding instructor at the high school level.
Why I Started Making Caps
After years of welding, I'd had my share of burns on the head and sparks in the ears. Every time I looked for a welding cap I actually wanted, they were either cheaply made or impossible to find. I knew there had to be a better way.
In February 2022, during the big game, I took apart my favorite welding cap and made patterns from it. That was the beginning. Since then I've made countless caps — 4, 6, and 8 panel styles, with and without bands, in solid colors, custom fabrics, and company logos. My personal favorite? The 4-panel cap with a band.
Handcrafted for the Trade
Every cap I make is built the way I'd want one built — quality materials, a fit that works under your helmet, and a style that says something about who you are. Whether you're a student just starting out or a seasoned pro, you deserve a cap that's as hardworking as you are.
Reach out anytime — I'd love to make your custom cap.
